Small Gatherings

Over the next six weeks, our Rector, John Yates, will be hosting several small gatherings to share the vision for future gospel ministry through Holy Trinity. The hope is for everyone in our congregation to join one of these small gatherings. This is an important moment in the life of the church, and your presence will be a blessing as we discuss the plan to continue raising up disciples in the years to come!
These gatherings are intentionally capped to allow for more intimate discussions and so that John can answer all of your questions.

By God’s grace we are seeking to raise $11 million so that we can add nearly 15,000 square feet on two stories directly connected to our original building. We will add a fellowship hall that can seat 250 for conferences, or 160 around tables for a meal. We will add a kitchen, common spaces, offices, and classrooms. We’ll add a choir room, and an indoor kids play area as well. By expanding our facility on the west lawn, we will ensure our ability to raise up the next generation and make a lasting impact on our city.
In order to do this we need you to be involved – generously, sacrificially, and prayerfully. We will not be able to do this without the commitment of every family in the church.

Since 2014, our membership has more than doubled. One worship service each Sunday has grown to three. Our church staff has expanded from seven to 17. We’ve graduated 160 New City Fellows. Among those graduates one has run for public office, three have founded non-profits, 10 now work on church staff teams, and more than a dozen serve on non-profit boards.
We have trained up and sent out more than two-dozen men and women as ordained clergy or ministry leaders. They have gone on to lead churches, found the UNC study center, start a classical Christian school, lead a Christian mission agency, and serve in hospital chaplaincy.
We have supported seven church plants in California, Virginia, Georgia, and North Carolina. We are equipping leaders, discipling children, and helping believers of all ages steward their gifts for the glory of God. Yet, there is more work to be done!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why now?
From the beginning of our original design process in 2012 we envisioned a second phase of construction that would expand our facilities. Our present building was constructed in such a way that it could match-up with a future structure on the west lawn. This new building marks the completion of our original vision. Our current facility is no longer adequate to meet the changing needs of our growing congregation. We are unable to host multiple activities at the same time, and our layout limits the kinds of events we are able to hold. We believe that with an expanded and renovated facility we will be able to host multiple activities simultaneously, and be better resourced to train, equip, and encourage all our members at every stage of life. We are convinced that waiting any longer to complete this expansion will negatively impact our ministry and work against the natural growth we are experiencing.
Where will the addition be and how big will it be?
This new building will occupy the west lawn of our property, between our current building and the AIA building next door. The scope of the project is limited to roughly 15,000 square feet over two stories.
Will you make any improvements to the sanctuary?
We will be adding carpet along the back and sides of the sanctuary, and installing pews with padding in place of chairs in the two, large central seating areas. We believe that these two changes will positively impact the comfort level of the congregation and improve acoustics. We are also exploring options to reduce glare on Sunday mornings.
What kind of kitchen will we have?
Our spacious ground-floor kitchen will include everything we need for food prep, catering and distribution of meals to groups of any size. It will have the look and feel of a residential kitchen with upgraded appliances and a large central island. Although it will not contain a commercial cook-top, we are planning for a convection microwave, warming oven, residential ovens, fridge, freezer, dishwasher, ice-maker, and coffee station.
What will this cost?
The total cost of the project is projected to be $11 million. That is a lot of money. But this is a one-time investment in a long-term ministry with a multi-generational impact. The return on investment will be extraordinary.
Will we be able to handle the increased costs related to having a larger facility?
In anticipation of extra financial resources necessary to maintain a larger facility, the vestry has set aside funds to augment the 2026 and 2027 operating budget if needed.
When will we build?
We hope to gather sufficient financial commitments to enable us to break ground in the summer of 2025, with anticipated completion in late 2026.
Where are we in the process?
The vestry and staff have been working on this for more than 2 years. The process began with a careful examination of our mission, vision and goals of our church. After we completed this strategic work, we gathered roughly 40 people to help with the design and details related to permitting and construction planning. The building is designed to support the desire to equip God’s people for kingdom living and raise up leaders for his church. This effort has been led by an experienced and extremely capable design team in conjunction with the architects who designed our initial building. Our final design which includes construction drawings should be completed this spring.
What is included in the plan?
The new building will contain a large parish hall (160 at tables, 250 in chairs), improved kid-friendly classrooms, meeting space, kitchen, choir/music room, and gathering spaces for groups. In our existing building, we need to renovate our upstairs education wing, transforming those rooms into offices and staff meeting space. Additionally, we will renovate a portion of our ground-floor children’s wing, adding an accessible indoor play area.
Will we have a pre-school or a gym?
Our space constraints are limited tight (both within our physical footprint, and outdoors), which would make running a viable pre-school or including a gym extremely difficult. For this reason neither of these is a part of our plan.
How about a playground?
Although it’s not included in the drawings for our next phase of development, we would love to build an outdoor playground in the future.
How much parking will we have?
With our current design we will only lose 1-2 parking spaces.
What is our debt situation?
The church currently owes $3.18 million on construction and property loans, and we are paying an additional $12,400 in principal each month ($148,800 annually). While we do not expect to take on more long-term debt to pay for this project, we will need temporary construction financing to carry us through the 3 year pledge period.
If we receive an amount in pledges which exceeds the cost of the project, our intent will be to pay down the current debt so that we are closer to being debt free.
