MORNING SERVICE SERMON SERIES

We Believe: Back to Basics with the Nicene Creed

If you want to become good at a sport or excel at a craft, you must master the basics.  Even as you advance it’s important to keep going back to the basics to keep you sharp.  The same is true of our Christian faith.  That’s why, every week in worship we go back to basics when we say the Creeds.  They’re basic, but there is nothing simple about the truths they tell us.  Here we learn about the being and unity of God in three-persons, we are reminded of the hope of resurrection, and we are instructed on the nature of the Church.  There is a lot to take in!  This fall we will spend 7 weeks going back to basics as we explore what the Nicene Creed teaches, why it matters, and how it shapes our lives.

EVENING SERVICE SERMON SERIES

The Hidden Hand of God: The Story of Esther

There’s nothing in the world more powerful than a good story. Nothing can stop it. No enemy can defeat it. Stories are exciting and suspenseful, they captivate the imagination and inspire the will. The book of Esther is no exception. Except that, the story of Esther doesn’t simply exist to entertain its reader or convey truth or even to recall history. No, Esther is a story that recounts God’s surprising preservation of his promise and his people when they are threatened with annihilation by a superpower.

Through the story of Esther we discover the hidden hand of God working out deliverance for his people and showing again and again, that he is faithful and powerful to do what he has promised. Although the Lord is never named or mentioned, as the story unfolds his invisible presence is glaringly obvious. The conclusion of the matter can only be that God is always present even when circumstances say otherwise. For the people of God today, the story of Esther provides a confident reassurance and a divine comfort that our God is always present and never absent, even when it isn’t obvious.

  • This sermon series will run for seven weeks from Sept. 8 through Oct. 20.

RECENT SERMONS AND TALKS

Rev. Dr. John Yates III - April 16, 2023

Sermon: Our New Humanity

Scripture References: Romans 8:1-17

From Series: "Life in the Spirit "

Before he left his disciples Jesus promised to send them the Holy Spirit. When he made that promise they could not have foreseen the dramatic events that would unfold on Pentecost! Things aren’t quite as dramatic today, but Jesus’s promise to the disciples holds true for us. When we put our faith in Jesus he gives us his Spirit. But who exactly is the Holy Spirit and what does life “in the Spirit” look like? We’ll be asking these questions and others over three weeks in April as we take a look at one of the most incredible chapters in the whole New Testament: Romans 8.
