Critics and scholars have written countless words about Jesus, making claims for who he is and what he accomplished. But what does Jesus have to say about himself? Mark, the gospel-writer, spoke quickly. At least that’s how I imagine him. Everything in his gospel is short, succinct, and straight to the point. Sometimes, however, he slows down because he wants us to pay special attention. Mark 5 is one place he does this. An exorcism and two miraculous healings give us a window into the character, compassion, and ministry of Jesus unlike any other chapter in Mark. As we begin the shift from summer to fall, when so many of us move from relaxed to relentless activity, we are going to slow down with Mark and zoom in on Jesus in order to get our bearings.
