Seeking God in the Psalms

We think of the Psalms as a collection of prayers, but they’re so much more than this.  Not only do they show us how to pray to God they teach us how to live in his world.  At the heart of what they teach is that a life well-lived is a life of seeking God – seeking his presence, seeking his praise, seeking his consolation, and seeking an explanation when we are overwhelmed or confused by life.  As the summer draws to a close and we prepare for the rhythms of a new school year we are going to seek the Lord together in the psalms, asking for wisdom while learning to pray.

RECENT SERMONS AND TALKS

Rev. Dr. John Yates III - August 24, 2025

Sermon: Two Healings, One Lord

Scripture References: Mark 5:21-43

From Series: "Slow Down and Zoom In On Jesus"

Mark, the gospel-writer, spoke quickly. At least that’s how I imagine him. Everything in his gospel is short, succinct, and straight to the point. Sometimes, however, he slows down because he wants us to pay special attention. Mark 5 is one place he does this. An exorcism and two miraculous healings give us a window into the character, compassion, and ministry of Jesus unlike any other chapter in Mark. As we begin the shift from summer to fall, when so many of us move from relaxed to relentless activity, we are going to slow down with Mark and zoom in on Jesus in order to get our bearings.
