MORNING SERVICE SERMON SERIES

ENCOUNTERING THE RISEN JESUS

Human beings are fragile creatures.  Failure, grief, doubt, and rebellion are all woven into the fabric of human experience.  And yet, it is precisely in these places that the risen Jesus meets us and transforms us.  This is nowhere more obvious than in Jesus’s one-on-one encounters recorded in Scripture after his resurrection.  Join us in April and May as we encounter the risen Jesus and witness how his divine power is made perfect in our weakness.

  • April 7 – Encountering Jesus in Failure (John 21:1-14)
  • April 14 – Confirmation Sunday with the Rt. Rev. Steve Wood
  • April 21 – Encountering Jesus in Grief (Luke 24:13-35)
  • April 28 – Encountering Jesus in Doubt (John 20:24-29)
  • May 5 – Encountering Jesus in Rebellion  (Acts 9:1-22)

EVENING SERVICE SERMON SERIES

THE PARABLES OF JESUS: MARK CHAPTER 4

A good parable is a work of art, and Jesus used them constantly in his teaching about the Kingdom of God. The Gospel of Mark characterizes Jesus as a parable maker: ‘He did not say anything to them without using a parable’. He used these stories to promise, command, warn, forgive encourage, inform, condemn, argue and ultimately proclaim about the coming kingdom and how to live in light of it. Jesus’ teaching is as exciting and important today as it was in his own time, if we will listen. He said: ‘He who has ears to hear, let him hear’ (Mk 4:9). Join us on Sunday evenings as we explore the parables of Mark 4.

  • April 14 – Mark 4:1-20
  • April 21 – Mark 4:21-25
  • April 28 – Mark 4:26-34

RECENT SERMONS AND TALKS

Rev. Dr. John Yates III - August 7, 2022

Sermon: The Absurdity of Disobedience

Scripture References: Jonah 1:1-17

From Series: "Running from Grace: The Ministry of Jonah"

When God called, Jonah ran. He wanted nothing to do with God’s mission of mercy. But God was hard to escape. He chased Jonah down at sea and finally got his attention in the belly of a whale. Only then did Jonah obey. Sometimes this is the way things go between us and God. Obedience is hard. Grace can be costly. But God, in his mercy, always knows what is best. Join us in August as we watch and learn from the most reluctant prophet in the Bible.
